What is the Purpose of Gift Giving at Christmas?

Since it is the Christmas season and gift giving or should I say gift buying is the happening event. The radio continually reports how most shoppers will spend the first few months of the new year getting out of the debt they accrue while shopping. (in other words, spending money they don’t have)

People have described me as frugal. I won’t go into detail, but you are probably thankful if you are not on my shopping list for material items. 😒I am a no frills type of giver, simply practical!

Although, I have been described as frugal, I think of my gift giving as economical and sensible. I am conscience of the way I use the money God has given me. (Matthew 25) Alright, sometimes in the past I have been down right cheap. But I am growing in this area and have not perfected it yet.

What is gift giving?

Should we give over and above our finances?

Should we put such effort into giving that we budget year around, so we are not enslaved to debt?

What type of gifts are appropriate during this gift giving season? Useful, practical, extravagant, free, out of budget?

Why is Christmas celebrated with gift giving?

If we are offering a gift at the altar and have something against our brother we are to stop, leave the gift until after we have reconciled with the one we have an issue with.  – The condition of our hearts and our relationships come before giving.  Matthew 5:23-24 (a gift at the altar is considered a sacrifice)

Frankincense, myrrh and gold were gifts the Wisemen gave to the infant Jesus. What did they really give?

Frankincense – a gummy resin from Balsam trees and are native to southern Arabia. The product had to be retracted from the trunk of the Balsam tree then be transported, creating a costly item that was used in the holy temples to make incense for worship.

Gold – a fine metal of value. Pages could be discussed on the multiple uses of gold.

Myrrh – a gummy resin from a tree or shrubs located in Arabia, Ethiopia and East Africa. Along with other uses, myrrh is known for being used as an anointing oil and used in Jewish burial customs. John 19:39

The Wisemen brought these particular gifts referred to as treasures in Matthew 2:11. These treasures were chosen specifically for the person they were being given to and had a value to them.

What is Christmas to God?

What is Christmas to Jesus?

In the beginning…. He started giving to us before He created us. The earth, stars, sun, fruit, rivers, trees…. the list goes on as He created a paradise for us.

He created Adam then gave Him a suitable helper, Eve.

God’s Word – a gift of knowledge.

Wisdom – a gift He gives to those who seek.

He gave us Sundays, time sanctified, a day of rest to remember all the slavery He has saved us from.

Out of love, gift giving began with Him.

The most valuable gifts we have didn’t come at a cost of money. Is spending money we don’t have a sacrifice or slavery to financial debt?

We celebrate Christmas because of the ultimate gift given to us of a costly sacrifice given through love.

John 3: 15 – 17 that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life. For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotton Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
